Race Report With top seed Pete Vincent (Mid-Devon CC) missing due to flu symptoms, Julius Jennings (Guerciotti-jjcoach.com) stepped up to the mark with a comfortable 39 min 14 sec effort to win in the opening event of the Navy Weekender. Jennings, a regular winner of South West TT events throughout 2003-2006, has showed that consistent winter training does pay off and seems to have found some early season form. Host club rider Steve Kelly (RNRMCA), winner of the recent St Austell Wheelers Sporting TT and current SWBAR champion Karl Hodson (Guerciotti-jjcoach.com) also went under the 40 minute barrier, but some 42 seconds adrift of Jennings with a shared time of 39 min 56 sec. It was encouraging to see a few juniors tackle the rolling course and Jack Baker (Mid Devon CC) came out on top with 46 min 8 sec, whilst club mate Joanna Edwards (Mid Devon CC) was the only lady to take the start and honours with a creditable time of 56 min 9 sec. Guerciotti-jjcoach.com took the team victory from the RNRMCA.

Race Report
Julius Jennings (Guerciotti-jjcoach.com) was the only rider to go under the hour on this difficult and testing undulating course in 59 min 50 sec, making it a double win during the Navy Weekender. Simon Edney (North Devon Wheelers) improved on yesterday fourth to finish runner up, although nearly two minutes adrift in 1 hr 1 min 43 sec, but securing the Navy Weekender Vets on Std award in the process with some spare capacity. Jennings’ team mate Karl Hodson (Guerciotti-jjcoach.com) was only 9 seconds off Edney in third and along with Stephen Sincock ensured (Guerciotti-jjcoach.com) took the team title for the second successive day. Not to be outdone by his dad, Harry Edney (North Devon Wheelers) aged 14, put in a sterling performance to take the Junior U18 category. A special note to the tandem Kenny Parker and his blind stoker Nick Mills, who were clocked at just over 60 mph on the dual carriageway descent and they would have gone faster if they had more gears!!

Thank you To Captain J Woodcock Royal Navy, OBE for allowing us to use HMS RALEIGH and the Gymnasium facilities as the HQ. The Main Gate Security Staff for being so accommodating and helpful in ensuring all personnel riders and families gained access to the establishment with as little fuss as possible. The riders of the RNRMCA (Keith Ashby, Paddy McMonagle, Mikey Graham, Marc Dowling, Nobby Clarke, Nutty Edwards, Bob Richards, Chris Vellacott, Roger Ridley, Andy Phipps, Jerry Bromyard, Simon Tripp, Garry Drew, Richard Lee and Tom Rebhan) who helped set up the course and provide marshalling duties, without whom this race could not go ahead. A big thank you to the Finish Timekeeper, Mike Brewer (Plymouth Corinthians CC) who were as professional and meticulous as ever and to Barry Day (Mid-Devon) whom having instructed the Assistant Timekeeping Course at RALEIGH on the Saturday morning, kindly came to our rescue at short notice to cover the Start Timekeeper duties for both days as our original Start Timekeeper, Simon Paget was rushed to hospital with Kidney Stones!! We wish him speedy recovery. Once again the chefs did us proud, especially Bill Ferguson and Nutty Edwards from the RN Cookery School who provided fresh cream cakes for both days. This was superbly backed up by Maxine & Taylor Ashby who provided home cooking and acted as tea ladies for the 2nd year on the trot. £71.16 was raised from the refreshment donations and the masseur contribution from Arthur Lowe and this will be finding its way towards the Exeter and District Kidney Patients Association soonest. A big thank you to all those personnel who dipped their hands into their pockets and contributed generously.
Heads Up The RNRMCA 2 Stage Hill Climb which will take place around Princetown on Sat 3 Oct 09. It involves 8 miles of up, up, up and a little bit of down in between. This will be my last CTT Open event that I will be organising for a few years as I am due to be posted away again come next year, so I will be looking at a suitable volunteer from within the club to take over and carry on this fine tradition.
